The room
The show takes place in a small windowless space, a box. Juliette warns me: the room has no quality, per se. Juliette qualifies: from a room one could not ask for less; it has four walls, a door and a ceiling, and one light. Here we are asking more of this room.

The band
My grandma’s thick fingers were a mobile display for rings in gold and precious stones. A rosary ring for a religion she did not believe anymore, an engagement ring from a marriage that widowed her. One was passed on to me in my teens – a warm gold band holding a skinny green stone in a sharp shape, elongated. It only fit on one of my fingers, and was light but felt heavy and like an extremity of her soft body. I was proud to be trusted with something old; I had not met many objects of an age that implied lineage and survival. In Poland, most objects made before the war – the one war with its infinite scattered trail – no longer exist; they are not expected to exist. The metals have been molten and perhaps we believe they deserved to be molten, and the antique markets are like deserted battlefields; only military souvenirs remain. I imagined my grandma must have defended the ring with her life. “My mother told me that’s Russian gold”, said my schoolmate at a sleepover. “The stone is a shard of glass. My mother can tell the difference, she used to trade. She says you couldn’t sell this to anyone.” I’m unsure if I understand what Russian gold is to gold and what glass is to stone.

The bind
A lien (/ˈliːn/ or /ˈliːən/) is a form of security interest granted over an item of property to secure the payment of a debt or performance of some other obligation. The owner of the property, who grants the lien, is referred to as the lienee and the person who has the benefit of the lien is referred to as the lienor or lien holder. The etymological root is Anglo-French lien or loyen, meaning "bond", "restraint", from the Latin ligamen, from ligare "to bind".

The box
The most precious things are kept in small containers. For jewellery, these are lined with velvet or plastic covered with fuzz that dents and collects dust. The smallest and prettiest boxes are made for pills: their holy molecules are most precious.

The bond
The takeaway box shapes my dinner into a picture frame. The organic matter would not have become rectangular otherwise. Things that we can look through can be easily changed: they warp and stain.
r/askscience, 13 yr. ago [deleted]: “Why does Tupperware stain?”

“Tupperware is plastic, obviously. This plastic, like many, is made of long non-polar molecules. Oils are, basically by definition, also non-polar. Polar things tend to stick to polar things and non-polar things to non-polar things. You notice this a lot with pasta sauce. Now, pasta sauce has oil in it, but it also has all those molecules that make it red. One of the main molecules that do this is lycopene. Lycopene dissolves in oil, so it's free to float around and bind to new things, and it's very coloured, so it doesn't take much of it to stain. Take a look at its atomic structure. It's long, straight, and the lack of any letters in the structure shows that it's all carbon and hydrogen. Very, very non-polar. Tupperware (the semi-transparent flexible containers) are made from low-density polyethylene. In terms of its structure, it's a long chain of just carbons and hydrogens. Pretty similar to lycopene, right? That's why they stick to each other really well. They're both about as far away molecularly as you can be from water, so water doesn't penetrate the plastic like lycopene and oil do. That also explains why it's so hard to wash away the red stains once they're in your containers.”

The hold
A holding company does not produce goods or services itself. Its purpose is to own bonds. In some jurisdictions around the world, holding companies are called parent companies. The asset stripping and subsequent bankruptcy proceedings of Sears Holdings Corporation, the holding company of Kmart and Sears retailers that ended in a leveraged buyout and collapse in 2018, is considered one of the prime examples of the recent phenomenon referred to as “retail apocalypse”.

The anchor
A big-box store is a physically large retail establishment, usually part of a chain of stores. The term "big-box" references the typical appearance of buildings occupied by such stores. Typical architectural characteristics include a large, free-standing, generally single-floor structure referred to as a shoe-box, built on a concrete slab. The flat roof and ceiling trusses are generally made of steel, and the walls are concrete blocks clad in metal or masonry siding. The structure typically sits in the middle of a large, paved parking lot. The exterior is designed primarily for access by motor vehicles. After bankruptcy or abandoning the site, the lot may be referred to as a greyfield. Greyfield is a neologism that means an underused real estate asset – a comparison to greenfields, meaning underused natural land, and brownfields, meaning contaminated post-industrial land. Redeveloping a greyfield can be much cheaper than building on a greenfield site or a brownfield site.

An "anchor tenant", sometimes called an "anchor store", "draw tenant", or "key tenant", is a considerably larger tenant in a shopping mall. They are typically located at the ends of malls, sometimes in the middle. With their broad appeal, they are intended to attract a significant cross-section of the shopping public to the center. They are often offered steep discounts on rent in exchange for signing long-term leases in order to provide steady cash flows for the mall owners.

Shopping centres with anchor stores have consistently outperformed those without one, as the anchor helps draw shoppers initially attracted to the anchor to shop at other shops in the mall.

Thus, a mall which loses its last anchor is often considered to be a dead mall.

I am sat at a café on Regents Canal, waiting to go to work for a sculptor up in Angel. I like it here because there is a lock that water gushes out of and a small doorway in a wall where water crashes down two steps around ninety degrees. I walk past a lot of houseboats on the canal and always think about how sculptural they are. My partner thinks it is to do with compression. Things are stacked on top of each other or squeezed together or in odd positions by necessity.

I am thinking about Rose and Lucinda’s work and how to write about their art practices which I have known for nearly ten years now.There are other artists that I think mine similar veins - Corita Kent’s snipped and ecstatic language and Yuji Agematsu’s precious and cartographic trash calendars and Moyra Davey’s diaristic photographs folded and taped and battered by their movement from place to place.

I have lived with Rose for maybe three or four years now. I am about to move out to live with my partner and my room is empty asidefrom stacks of boxes and me in my bed. The floor of the house is often scattered with crumbs of wax and plaster and resin. Rose’s sculptures are in every room and nearly every cupboard.I have lived with Lucinda’s work for even longer. Every morning I look at a drawing of a sun bisecting a striped field in wax crayon.When I stay with my partner I look at an ink drawing of a crying figure overlaid with birds who is declaring I ENVY THE SIBERIAN CRANE I ENVY ANYTHING WITH WINGS.
28.03.2024
I am sat at London Bridge station waiting for my train home from work. It is my last night in London and I have not had the time toorganise to do anything to mark the occasion. Yesterday I packed a vase that Rose made for me a couple of years ago which I keep pens in. Curving round it is my name written in capital letters and it is covered with flowers and spiders. Some of their spindly legs have broken off and they rattle around in the bottom. When I get home I will put a cut out painting by Lucinda with all of my boxes, a large head in profile with splashing spray paint tears.

In a couple of weeks I am starting a year of more or less full time work and I am worried about how it will impact my ability to make art. Rose and Lucinda both seem to incorporate their work so seamlessly into their lives. At least from my romantic outside perspective their work seems to unfold from their day to day and vice versa. It feels honest and earnest to the point of embarrassment. Dining chairs are held up on a level with saints and angels and skyscrapers are the size of flowers or the other way round and everything is whirring and still. I have got an ink drawing of Lucinda’s that looks like a Richard Scarry Busytown illustration with cars puffing exhaust and ladders sticking awkwardly into the sky.
I was in a period of very heavy drinking when I first met Rose. When I left the pub she looped my house keys onto my earring to stop me losing them and wrote KEYS ON EARRING on both my hands with lots of pointing arrows.
31.03.2024
It is Easter day and the clocks have gone forward. I am writing this at half six and it is full daylight. My brother and dad start listing the names of flowers. I am thinking about the blossoms and bulbs on Rose’s sculptures with welcoming archways of lemons. Lucinda’sdrawings so often feature Christian figures but without ever feeling pious or out of time. Clustered with graffiti tags and sunbeams and cars they are brought back into the world and are an active part of it. Frantic when grouped together in isolation they become meditations.I am staring out of the back door window at the hammering spring rain and TEACH HIM TO LOVE NATURE repeats in my head.

	A change of seasons often brings a renewed sense of optimism. With each quarter turn of the earth's axis, shifts in atmosphere alter how we calibrate our daily lives, measured by the hours of daylight and by the layers of clothing we wear. As summer turns to autumn, 'Something Seasonal' features artists who seek out what the earth has supplied, often taking familiar things and offering an alternative reading of them.The objects that fall into their grasp aren't dealt too many changes - rather the artist’s close inspection reveal subtle idiosyncrasies on the surfaces. Maddy Whitelaw incongruously balances overlooked debris with more refined manufactured materials she's sourced; Yui Usui's cabinet drawers contain neatly folded designer shirts embellished by patches she's sewn on top; Nancy Allen weaves strips of ribbon into pebbles she's combed from the Lake District and then engraved; Georgia Dickie's found shipping box is a vessel for decoratively painted scraps. Each artist is resourceful with their finds. In Maddy and Yui's assemblages, their delicate approaches tempt new meaning through subtle tensions in arrangement. In Nancy and Georgia’s more calculated resolutions, their cuts and piercings reconfigure their objects a new. And, as with the relentless mutability of the seasons, every sculptor shares an ingenuity for altering these otherwise familiar items, posing an afterlife that suspends them beyond immediate recognition.

<img width="1000" height="667" width_o="1000" height_o="667" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3c4fb1135a1baa731ef41e956838dce918de00159da4474f7de54ebf24106b99/3E0A9349.jpg" data-mid="190395187" border="0" data-scale="90" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3c4fb1135a1baa731ef41e956838dce918de00159da4474f7de54ebf24106b99/3E0A9349.jpg" />

	In Robert Pepperell’s mid nineties exploration of posthumanism he sets out a series of statements which form what he calls The Post Human Manifesto. In a subsection of this entitled Statements on Consciousness, Humans and Philosophy, he describes the human body as having no boundaries, and presents the idea that no finite division can be drawn between the environment, the body and the brain.
“If we accept that the mind and the body cannot be absolutely separated, and that the body and the environment cannot be absolutely separated, then we are left with the apparently absurd yet logically consistent conclusion that: consciousness and the environment cannot be absolutely separated.” - Robert Pepperell, 1995It's faintly amusing that the prefix post- fuses these ideas with contemporaneity and the future, with evolution and innovation. It may be that a key detail is missing, a recognition that our inherent entwinement with our environment is something that has already existed, was perhaps lost, and is now being regained. Here we could question whether posthumanism has an exclusive hold over this entwinement, or whether - perhaps more feasibly - it is repairing a severance caused at some point in modernity.Evie Savini’s work draws upon a keen interest in technology and spirituality, merging the two into an abstract whole that circumvents boundaries just as the posthuman turns away from the illusion of borders between themselves and their surroundings. Her physical materials punctuate an invisible landscape made from electromagnetic fields, sound waves and other energies to which she has a particular sensitivity. Growing up around Paganism, a profound connection with the natural world informs an approach to art replete with the intuition of a mystic, one attuned to behaviours of our surroundings which we cannot see, but can feel if our perceptions are set a certain way.This intuition is presented in Groundsystem, a work which is ostensibly an interactive sound installation using largely primitive technology to expose energetic systems concealed within our environment. Speaker drivers and copper pendulums are the primary elements, placed in dialogue with each other to translate a map of unseen territories into audible information that is perceived, and on some level understood, by the participants. Becoming cartographers of an intangible space, their explorations are reminiscent of dowsing, utilising technology to, in the words of the artist, ‘reopen our connection to magic’.Aware of its potentially alienating esoteric nature, Groundsystem can be experienced on numerous levels, even purely for its superficial properties. As a sound producing, site specific sculpture it integrates with its location, embedding itself within the space rather than on top of it. Through creating false spaces in which the speaker components sit, Evie illustrates visually the concept of something being discovered, waiting for the curious eyes, and ears, of human beings. This accessibility highlights a democratic approach to sharing what is at its fullest a rather academic piece, influenced by the artist’s experience of free parties, and the attitude of welcoming and sharing that has characterised and been central to them for over 30 years.“Techonology is a manifestation of human desire.” - Evie Savini, 2023
Modern human beings in the developed world live in a pulsating web of data signals, electronic interference and communication channels.These join and complexify the more ancient energy networks our ancestors existed alongside. In her work Evie not only accepts the veiled strangeness of the present, but with intuition her guide and technology her talisman, finds ways to identify the magic that rests within it.

We are a artist run studio and exhibition space located on the edge of Hackney Downs Park in East London. We hope to foster an environment in which artists feel open to experiment, often making work in situ, site specific or using our space as a opportunity to open up new areas of their craft.

103, Warwick Works, Downs Rd, Lower Clapton, London, E5 8QJ. Find us below the railway bridge, just off Downs Road.

Wednesday - Saturday 12-5.30pm.&nbsp;
